Volcano House Hawaii: Rates, Lava Views & Where to Stay Near Kilauea

Volcano House hotel on the rim of Kilauea caldera at golden hour, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

What Is Volcano House?

Volcano House is the only hotel inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its address — 1 Crater Rim Drive — says it all. You’re not near the volcano. You’re on it.

It dates back to 1846, making it Hawaii’s oldest hotel. Today it has 33 rooms, 10 cabins, and a restaurant perched directly above Halemaumau Crater at 4,000 feet elevation. No TVs, no pool — just raw volcanic scenery and a stone fireplace in the lobby.

Famous past guests include Mark Twain and several US Presidents. The current building underwent a full renovation and reopened in recent years, preserving its historic character while updating the rooms.

Can You See Lava from Volcano House?

Right now — yes. Kilauea has been erupting in episodic fountaining events since December 2024. Even between major events, the orange crater glow at night is visible from the hotel’s porch and crater-view rooms.

That said: weather at 4,000 feet is unpredictable. Cloud cover can roll in without warning. Stay at least two nights to improve your odds of catching a clear sky.

Check live eruption status at volcanoes.usgs.gov (USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory) before you visit. Updated daily.

Want to watch the lava glow on your own schedule? Sweet Aloha Hale in Volcano Village is 5 minutes from the park entrance. Drive in at midnight or 5 AM — the park is open 24/7. Full kitchen, private rainforest setting, no crowds.➤  Check availability at → Lodge at Rent

Volcano House Rates, Rooms & What to Expect

Room rates typically run $300–$500 per night. Crater-view rooms sit at the higher end. Cabins are more affordable. Note: park entry ($30/vehicle) is separate.

The experience is genuinely special — but it’s a National Park lodge, not a resort. Rooms are comfortable and clean, but basic. Most guests who leave poor reviews expected Kaanapali-style luxury. Go in with the right mindset and you’ll love it.

Best rates are typically in January and April. The hotel is not on Booking.com or Expedia — book direct at hawaiivolcanohouse.com.

Does Volcano House Have a Restaurant?

Yes — the Rim Restaurant is the only dining option inside the park. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily with Pacific Rim cuisine and direct crater views from the dining room.

It’s better than you’d expect for a park lodge. The breakfast is especially popular. Reservations are recommended in peak season as tables fill up with day visitors too.

Volcano House is at 1 Crater Rim Drive, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island’s south side.

        • From Hilo Airport (ITO): ~45 minutes via HI-11. Closest and easiest.

        • From Kona Airport (KOA): ~2.5 hours around the island’s south coast via HI-11.

Is It Worth Staying at Volcano House?

Yes — if the experience matters more than amenities.

Waking up on the rim of an active volcano is genuinely unlike anything else. For park lovers, photographers, and bucket-list travelers, it delivers completely.

Where it falls short: it’s not a luxury resort. No pool, no beach, basic rooms. Travelers expecting Maui-level comfort will be disappointed.

Stay at Volcano House if you:

                • Want the iconic, immersive crater experience

                • Love national park lodge character

                • Are a photographer chasing lava glow from your window

                • Are staying 1–2 nights and want everything walkable

Choose a Volcano Village Rental if you:

                  • Need more space or a full kitchen

                  • Are staying 3+ nights and want a comfortable home base

                  • Have a budget under $250/night

                  • Traveling with pets (most rentals allow them)

                  • Volcano House is sold out on your dates

                Volcanic Rock Decor & Souvenirs

A quick but important note: removing lava rocks, sand, or any natural material from the park is a federal offense. It’s also culturally significant — the rocks are tied to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes. Leave them where they are.

For volcanic rock-inspired decor and authentic Hawaii souvenirs, shop at the Volcano House gift shop, the Volcano Art Center Gallery inside the park, or local artisan vendors at the Sunday Volcano Village farmers market. Online, look for Hawaii-based Etsy sellers who source ethically.
